Back to Basics

Tonight I picked up my pens and headed up town to Lexington and 63rd for some much needed life drawing.
Tonight I had to choose which life drawing session I was going to go to. There were four that I knew of that were available. Oh New York, you show off!

I ended up at the Society of Illustrator’s club house.

“On February 1, 1901 a group of nine artists and one advising businessman founded the Society with this credo: β€œThe object of the Society shall be to promote generally the art of illustration and to hold exhibitions from time to time”. The first monthly dinners were attended by such prominent illustrators as Howard Pyle, Maxfield Parish, N.C. Wyeth, Charles Dana Gibson, Frederic Remington, James Montgomery Flagg, Howard Chandler Christy and special guests like Mark Twain and Gloria Swanson.”

It’s been so long since I’ve made a trek up there. Tonight was crinkly with inspiration and dedication to craft. I forget how beautiful it is there.

There’s no way you can walk along those walls and not recommit to dream and desire and drive. It’s a place to remember why you’re in New York, and why your art is worth it.

If you’re a New York based artist or illustrator and you haven’t been to the Society of Illustrators building on the Upper East Side, do me a favor, find your nearest mirror.

Stand in front of it. Take your dominant hand and strike your cheek as hard as you can. Take a good long look at the print it has left. If you haven’t left a mark you’ve done it wrong. Feel remorse.

Then do yourself a favor. Get up there. Soak it in. Love it. Walk among greatness.

#summerchores This one goes out to @jenmorello 😘
#onlyinnyc Reuniting my husband with this one million year-old pup was a highlight on our banner blink-and-you'll miss it trip home. Brooklyn, we'll miss you forever. Thanks @kymberella281 & @peckelmann you made this guy's weekend. Today has been crap, but now it is beautiful. #gofigure Kisses!
Nature My husband is the dreamiest. I'm pretty limited in what I can eat these days. We've sidelined dairy, gluten and legumes to help with my auto-immune diseases. There was something particularly tempting while we were in Park City this weekend. It boasted its delicious lime salt loudly. Alas, it wasn't anything I could eat. I lamented and went GF/DF etcF, and then quickly forgot about it. As with most things that cause me fleeting disappointment, Matt remembered. Last night when I got home from the studio, I found this little bottle waiting for me on the counter. He made it himself. #limesalt #love #chefwifelife Dragon swimming in a bathtub. We adopted this dishy-fishy in Mexico during the #happilyeveralvarez wedding week of dreams. There are few worldly possessions that bring me as much joy.
